TONGUE AND GROOVE PANELING

The tongue-and-groove style is one of the unique selling points of the wooden panels offered by Sylvan Ply. This method is used essentially to join and fit two pieces or edges together and requires minimal stress or effort. It is used primarily in construction, wall panelling, flooring, parquetry and similar constructions. People opt for this because installing this is so easy that anyone with decent wood crafting skills can attempt it themselves.

INSTALLATION

Each piece has a slot (the groove) cut along one edge and a thin, deep ridge (the tongue) on the opposite edge. The tongue projects a little less depth than the groove. The joint is not normally glued, as shrinkage would pull the tongue off. Two or more pieces, thus, fit together closely.

BENEFITS OF USING TONGUE AND GROOVE

  • Eliminates the need to saw behind end-to-end on studs
  • Two or more pieces can fit together closely
  • It requires minimal stress or effort
  • Creates a single flat surface
  • It can be used for sheathing buildings and raising a concrete framework
